Proverbs 6:6-8 NKJV “Go to the ant you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest.”

What can we learn from the ant here? This passage confronts laziness, passivity, lack of initiative, procrastination and ultimately lack of discipline. It encourages us to consider the ant as a solution to these things, so let’s take a closer look at some of the characteristics we can learn from the ant:

  1. Self motivation & autonomy: they work diligently without a leader telling them what to do. They possess internal drive and take responsibility for their individual tasks.

  1. Proactive planning: they gather and store provisions during the harvest season to prepare for lean Winter months, avoiding procrastination.

  2. Resilience & persistence: When an ant faces an obstacle or an object too heavy for just one individual it persists and recruits peers to share the load. The focus is collective success rather than individual ego.

  3. Balance and Adaptability: Modern observations show that ant colonies use specialized roles, rotation, and adjustment rather than mindless, endless hustle—knowing when to shift tasks based on the colony's changing needs.

  4. Decentralized Collaboration: Complex colony tasks—like foraging, building, and waste management—happen without top-down command. Work emerges organically through local rules, communication, and shared purpose.

If you read just a few verses down it says “so shall your poverty come on you like a traveler” which reveals the result of laziness is poverty.

This theme of not being lazy is throughout scripture as well. Romans 12:11 ESV says “Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.” and 2 Thessalonians 3:10 ESV which says “If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat.”

Who knew there were so many lessons to be learned from the ant. If you’ve been guilty of laziness, procrastination and lack of motivation, just repent. Allow the lesson from the ant help you to change the way you think, and ask the Lord to help you to walk in diligence and faithfulness.

XO,

Liz
